Masquerades

Lagbaja
Standard

We are all masquerades
With disguised exterior
The world might be fooled
To believe the lies we live
How we manage to smile
Even when overwhelmed by sadness
Cheerfully we laugh in the crowd
Then comes the lonely night
Pillows get flooded by raindrops
We claim to be fine when we’re not
To be strong, when weak
To be happy, whereas hurting
Evolved into chameleons
Adapted to the art of pretense
Changing the colours of our lives
To blend on the canvass of the society
Vulnerability becomes masked
Like the creases on Lagbaja’s face
Safer to be a pretender, not a prey
Cos out there are ruthless predators
Lurking around to scavenge the weak
No better way to survive the jungle
Than to be a masquerade
